CEIR is proud to have contributed to Echo 72. Israel in München, a bold new operatic production that premiered at Staatsoper Hannover in January 2025. Conceived by composer Michael Wertmüller and librettist Roland Schimmelpfennig, and directed by Lydia Steier, the work confronts the tragic legacy of the 1972 Munich Olympics, where eleven Israeli athletes were killed in a terrorist attack.
The stage design by Flurin Borg Madsen featured a striking series of glass boxes that housed individual performers, each embodying a specific athletic discipline. These transparent enclosures served as symbolic microcosms—part exhibition space, part confessional—where history, identity, and trauma intertwined in a kaleidoscope of sound, light, and movement.
CEIR provided the bespoke aluminum ceiling panels that form the upper sections of these sculptural glass units. Finished in matte anodized aluminum and engineered for acoustic performance, the panels played a dual role: visually enhancing the minimal, modern aesthetic of the installation, and functionally supporting the production’s intricate soundscapes. Each unit was constructed with a modular system to allow for precision assembly and dynamic staging.
The opera unfolds as a sequence of poetic and disjointed scenes, reflecting on sport, conflict, and collective memory. The combination of contemporary composition, virtuosic performance, and abstract scenography resulted in a deeply immersive experience. Our panels, subtly embedded within the structure, helped frame the performers in a context that feels both architectural and theatrical.
At CEIR, we are dedicated to craftsmanship that elevates design and narrative. Our participation in Echo 72. Israel in München reflects our commitment to creative partnerships where materials do more than support—they speak. We are honored to see our work integrated into a production of such artistic and historical resonance.
